Why do some facial lines show only when I smile or frown?

How to tell expression lines from lines visible at rest, and what to bring to a consultation if you want advice.

Compare movement and rest in the same light

Look in a mirror in indirect daylight. Relax your face, then smile, frown or raise your eyebrows. Notice which lines appear only during movement and which are still visible after you relax. You might see both types in the same area.

Consider your skin and routine

Lines are a normal part of ageing. Sun exposure can contribute to premature skin ageing, and dryness can make fine lines look more noticeable. Daily sun protection and a moisturiser you tolerate are sensible starting points for your skincare routine.

Bring one or two specific questions

If you want advice, write down when you notice the lines and what you would like help with. Bring the names of products you use and details of any past treatments or reactions. Ask what each option could reasonably change and what it would involve.
