Why does my skincare suddenly sting?

What to do when familiar products suddenly feel uncomfortable, and how to spot a likely trigger.

Check what changed recently

Think about a new product, a stronger exfoliant, more frequent retinoid use or a recent procedure. Even familiar products can sting when your skin is irritated. Ask your prescriber before changing prescribed skincare.

Simplify until your skin feels comfortable

Use a mild cleanser and a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser you tolerate. In daylight use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and UVA protection if you tolerate it, plus shade and clothing. Follow your procedure’s aftercare if you’ve just had a peel or microneedling.

Add products back one at a time

Once the skin has settled, introduce one product at a time so you can see what triggers irritation. Ask a pharmacist or GP if it persists, keeps recurring or develops into a rash.
